Forklift Winch - A winch is a mechanical device which specializes in winding up or letting out or winding out or pulling in the tension of a wire rope, a rope, wire cable or a cable. It its most simple form it is made of a spool along with an attached hand crank. More complicated winches are found at the heart of machines like steam shovels, tow trucks and elevators. Occasionally the spool can be referred to as the winch drum. Elaborate designs have gear assemblies that can be driven by electric, pneumatic, internal or hydraulic combustion drives. Various winches could comprise a mechanical brake or a solenoid brake or a ratchet and pawl device so as to stop it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.

Commonly, the rope or cable is stored on the winch, nevertheless the capspan, a similar machine, does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member operates the winch handle using one hand while tailing the other so as to maintain tension on the turns. Some winches have a cleat or stripper to maintain tension. These designs are referred to as "self-tailing" winches.

Often, winches are used backstage as part of the mechanism to arrange staging in big theatrical shows. Lots of times the winches are really embedded in the stage floor and used in order to transfer large set pieces on and off stage.

Recently, winches have been fabricated in certain designs for snow and water sports. This new generation of winches is designed to be able to pull riders quickly across a body of water or of snow.
